Newman House, located at 192 Frontenac Street, is the centre of the university's Roman Catholic campus ministry. A full-time chaplain and co-chaplain coordinate a variety of activities for Catholic students and their friends. Founded as the Newman Club by 30 Catholic Queen's students in 1917, the centre used to be one of dozens of Newman Houses on campuses across North America, although many of these have now abandoned the old name. They were named for John Henry Newman, a prominent Anglican clergyman and Oxford academic whose conversion to Catholicism in 1845 was widely publicized and discussed in Victorian England. Neuroscience Studies, Centre for. Formally established in 2001, this Centre is an internationally recognized team of 45 basic and clinical scientists from departments and faculties across campus. Completed in 1912, Nicol Hall houses various Faculty of Applied Science departments. It is named after William Nicol, Queen's first professor of metallurgy and mining, and also the person who – more affluent than most professors – donated the funds for the building's construction. An addition to the rear of Nicol Hall was built in 1930 and extensively renovated in 1961. Nursing, School of. Queen's School of Nursing was established in 1942 to meet the growing wartime demand for nurses. The first director of the school was Dorothy Riches, a distinguished nurse who had been matron-in-chief of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. In 1967, the school became in effect a full-fledged faculty, reporting only to the principal and the senate and led by a dean and governed by a faculty board. Today, the school offers a four-year degree program, preparing students for professional nursing practice in health-care facilities or in the community. Students take courses in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Psychology and Sociology, as well as theoretical and clinical nursing courses. After completing their degree program, students must also write a provincial registration exam through the College of Nurses of Ontario to obtain the right to practice nursing in the province. The school has been housed in the Cataraqui Building since 1982, prior to which it was located in the central block and west wing of Summerhill. See also GlaxoSmithKline Clinical Education Centre.
